Protecting Your Computer from Viruses and Spyware for Free

Thursday, October 9, 2008
After investing both time and money in a variety of programs that failed to protect my computers from viruses and spyware, I finally found a great lineup of tools to do the job. And, the best part is that they are free!

If you are looking for a good anti-virus program, I recommend Avast! anti-virus (www.avast.com). Even if you already subscribe to an anti-virus service such as Symantec or McAffee, this is a great backup to have. It is my experience that Avast! actually catches viruses and trojans that the other programs out there do not. Avast! will alert you to any detected viruses or trojans in a separate window with a link for removal instructions. Avast! also updates its virus definitions automatically as long as you have an active internet connection. The interface is simple and intuitive. You can set up automated boot-time scans or manual scans almost effortlessly.

For spyware protection I recommend Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-Aware (www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware). Spybot S&D is a very powerful tool that scans and removes spyware from your computer. You can also use spybot to perform advanced procedures without having to directly access the registries and computer management features. Spybot S&D is, in my opinion, for more advanced users. A more basic spyware protection tool is Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware is a more intuitive program that allows you to set up automated or manual scans for spyware. Both of these programs will allow you to quarantine or delete the affected files. I always recommend that you use the quarantine feature. This saves you from deleting any necessary files.

If your anti-virus program alerts you that you have a virus then you might want to consider downloading Ewido (www.ewido.net). Ewido is a very powerful virus detection and removal tool. Ewido offers a free 30 day trial download after which you will need a subscription to continue to receive virus definition updates. I recommend Ewido if your computer is prone to viruses or trojans that are difficult to remove and continue to pop up despite your best efforts.

With this line-up of tools I have not only kept my own computers protected but I have also been able to rescue computers for co-workers, family and friends.

The free anti-virus and spyware protection protections gladly accept donations. So, if you are happy with the service you might consider offering a small donation in appreciation.

How Safe is Your Home's Wireless Computer Network?

Is Your Computer Information Viewable by Strangers?

This is a non-technical account about how vulnerable your wireless computer network may be. Actually, I've known about it for several years and was reminded when I read a recent account of a person that was having computer difficulty, called on a computer tech support person and discovered that she had been using her neighbors wireless Internet connection for months unbeknown to either of them.

I am astonished and frankly a bit frightened by the number of households in our community that have a wireless computer network that is easily accessible simply by a person driving down the street. In urban areas, I can imagine thousands of computers that that are vulnerable. In fact, while conducting some research for this article, I discovered that it appears as if data stolen from corporate computers is often attributable to an insecure wireless computer network.

Our son, who is employed in the high tech world and computer savvy, set-up our wireless computer network. During the course of doing it, he provided me with the information necessary to do it myself. Of course I didn't understand a word of it, but I nodded, was fascinated by his knowledge and skill and in a few moments with routers located in a couple of areas (those little flashing lights are cool!) we were ready to go.

During the few moments that he was engaged in establishing our wireless network, he did provide some information that I fear is unknown to many people.

Actually, he said we probably would not need to pay for our Internet access through the local cable company because there are certainly several neighbors that already have wireless home networks. He demonstrated by showing that the neighbor next door as well as across the street and to the rear of our home all had wireless networks and with two out of three he was able to access the Internet. Wow! I asked him if it was possible to view what was on their computers and he said sure, but it would take a few moments and besides, it was illegal and he wasn't interested.

Obviously, I wanted us to be protected and he assured me that by not using the default settings on the network and with the establishment of some simple computer protocols, no one would have access to our network. He went on to explain that when people install their home networks themselves, they frequently fail to protect themselves because they use the default settings. I asked him if it was widespread and he said yes and agreed to show me.

Later that afternoon, we went to a densely populated condo community and sat in the parking lot with a laptop. There were dozens of networks that were available and allowed us to access the Internet. Some he said were protected, but most were not. Later I read a report that said as many as 70% of home wireless networks are insecure and accessible to hackers.

Most people don't know how to go about accessing information from a home computer network if they were to gain entry through a poorly protected system. However, it only takes one hacker to intrude and steal data.

I suspect that there are many households in densely populated areas that are using a neighbor's Internet access. Even when our wireless network was established, my son looked at the data and said "Look at this, your computer is picking up the network next door." He quickly changed a password and pronounced the problem solved. Interestingly, he also changed the neighbors network password so they would not be vulnerable and we told them. I don't think they really understood, but they thanked us.
There are several ways to provide additional security for wireless home networks. Probably the simplest is to insure that you have changed the default password. If you are computer savvy, you have probably already done this, if not I suggest you insure your "computer techie" has provided you with adequate protection.

Sometimes I watch boxing on television and the words the referee uses as he briefs the combatants is, "Protect yourself at all times." I suspect those words apply to many of life's endeavors and they certainly are applicable to wireless home networks. Ya'll be careful out there!

How to Maintain Your Computer

Having your computer crash is really frustrating, especially if you're working on an important project. A good way to avoid such crashes is to maintain your computer. Maintaining your computer isn't complicated. In fact, you can keep your computer running quite smoothly if you follow the following tips.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #1: Use a Firewall

A firewall is a wonderful way to keep your computer maintained. A firewall is great for protecting against viruses, hackers, and several other threats. Setting up a firewall is really easy. Most service providers provide modems that have built-in firewalls. All you will need to do is to go to the modems webpage and fix the settings the way you would like them to be. Remember too much protection is better than not enough. You may have to lower your firewall settings from time to time to use certain applications, but make sure those applications are safe before lowering your settings. Also remember to put the settings back the way they were after using that application.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #2: Use Virus Protection

If you want to maintain your computer you must use virus protection. Viruses can damage your computer to the point that you have to either restore your computer to a previous date or you may even have to reinstall Windows all together. Check with your service provider, some ISPs provide virus protection for free.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #3: Have Spyware Protection

Part of maintaining your computer should also include protecting your identity while you're online. This means that you should install spyware protection, if your virus protection does not include it. Spyware protection will detect any threats that are trying to steal your information.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #4: Actually Use Your Protection Software

All too often people have virus and spyware protection, but they don't use it. If you want to maintain your computer, you must use these applications. I run my virus and spyware applications once a week and you should too.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #5: Update Your Protection Software

While it's important to have and use protection software it's even more important to keep that software up-to-date. If these applications are not up-to-date, they may not recognize new viruses and spyware.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #6: Run the Disk Defrag Tool

The disk defrag tool is found under the start menu, then programs, then accessories, then system tools. When you delete files or programs from your computer, small pieces of that information is left on your hard drive. When you run the disk defrag tool it will cleanup all those small pieces that have been leftover and it will fill in the gaps that these deleted items left. When you use this tip to maintain your computer your computer will run much faster and it will have fewer crashes.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #7: Download Patches

Always download patches for programs, especially Windows. Microsoft is constantly finding flaws in their operating system, so they are constantly putting out patches to fix these problems. The best thing to do is to set your computer to automatically download patches. Remember to check for patches for other programs as well.

How to Maintain Your Computer Tip #8: Update Your Browser and Other Applications

It's very important to update your software. Viruses are often made that enter your computer through a flaw in your browser or other software. Updating these applications will help to ensure that viruses do not make their way onto your computer.

How to Protect Your Computer and Your Family from Internet Predators

There is more than one kind of internet predator these days. First we have the computer viruses and spyware that attack your computer without any warning. If you don't have anti-virus and anti-spyware protection then your computer is in danger of being attacked. You can lose everything if you're not protected. It is essential to have these types of protection for your home or work computer.

Viruses, Trojans and Worms are grouped together because they are all protected against with the same kind of software, the anti-virus. Most people know they need to be protected against these threats but a lot of people do not realize just how bad these kind of threats are. It is estimated that there are more than 25 viruses released everyday. That comes out to a little more than one every hour. Pretty scary stuff if you really let that sink in. None of us want to get a virus but most of us have gotten one or two of them. I know I have and I have lost everything at one time. Pretty time consuming to have to re-install everything on your computer if you are able to do that. Luckily I was able to do that and the only viruses I have gotten were low risk. Ever since this happened to me I have made sure that my anti-virus and anti-spyware software are always up to date. This is a very important task, especially if you have important documents saved on your home or work computer.

Most viruses do more than spread throughout the internet and from one computer to another. They have more harmful things in mind such as leaving back doors open to allow unlimited access to the machines they infect, which in turn can lead to the maker of the virus hacking into your important files such as your online bank account, paypal account, and any other online financial account.

Some important things you need to do to make sure this does not happen is making sure your anti-virus software is up to date. Keeping this software up to date is a very important task you need to do as often as possible, especially if you have a dial-up connection. Given the release rate of viruses, no less than 6 hours of updating is recommended but an hourly check is not overly checking. It is not too time consuming to do this. Just make sure every time you connect to the internet that you do an update check to make sure everything is the way it should be. Family Watchdog offers subscription services to keep your computer up to date with the best software.

Choosing the right anti-virus software is important also and there are some very good free ones you can use that will keep your computer safe. Maybe you have an ISP like I do that gives you a good anti-virus software with your ISP subscription. I have MSN which in turn allows me to use McAfee anti-virus program. But if you don't have one with your ISP then here are a couple of recommended programs that are free to use: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic, and Avast for Home.

Next we have Spyware and Adware which are relatively new threats but one of the most dangerous. The motivations of these two are to profit from you either legally or illegally by collecting information from you and sending it back to the maker of the spyware. Just a few of the methods used to collect this information from you are keyboard logging, web form logging and system scanning.

If you still use Internet Explorer or an AOL browser that came with your computer then you are highly vulnerable to spyware and adware. It is highly recommended to switch to Mozilla FireFox browser because it is not only faster than IE but it has a track record of fixing security flaws in less than a week of announcement. Microsoft still has over 40 known vulnerabilities that are un-patched and are over six months old.

Some types of programs that use Spyware to collect information from you are search bars, weather monitors and screen savers. Some of the most common programs that use Spyware are DivX and Kazaa and it is highly recommended that if you want to use these programs, such as for downloading music then you should pay to have the no ad supported version.

Two of the biggest industries that support Spyware are pornography and the Russian Mafia. They account for over half of this software. If you do internet banking or online shopping you are at risk if you don't protect yourself against Spyware. It is estimated that over 92% of home computers are infected with Spyware and it is not unusual for an unprotected computer to have over 100 forms of Spyware on them.

There are ways to prevent Spyware. A good first step is to switch to the Firefox browser I have switched to it and it is one that I highly recommend. Here are a couple of very good anti-spy ware programs that are free to use; SpyBot Search and Destroy, and Adaware Personal SE.

Another internet predator to be aware of is a hacker. This is a major problem and no one wants their computer to be hacked into and their information stolen. This can lead to identity theft. An internet Firewall can protect you against this. The only problem with a firewall being installed is that it might only allow limited access for the user when in certain cases there needs to be more access. Firewalls installed by a network professional is the best way to go. Even though Windows XP Service Pack 2 comes by default with a firewall installed it would still be best to have a professional install this. This way you will have control over what is blocked and what is not. One way to get a firewall professionally installed is by going to Familywatchdog.com and asking them about their Linksys routers with a custom firewall installation.

The biggest internet predator that everyone who has children worries about the most are the sexual predators. They scour chat rooms, message boards, teen forums and even use instant messaging to find a pre-teen or teenager to try to lore them out of the house to meet them somewhere. Another great service of familywatchdog.com is their registered sex offender database. Just go on their website and there is a section on there that will tell you if any registered sex offender's live near you. I have used this free service and I now know that I have two registered sex offender's that live by me. You can even have it set-up to where you can receive email alerts if any new ones move by you. I have received two emails informing me of these two registered sex offender's that have moved just up the road from me. It is pretty scary but it is better to know if any live near you.

Parental controls are essential for computers when you have children using your home computer. There are all kinds of illicit material online that you don't want your children to see. Family Watchdog will be releasing later on this year a home router/firewall appliance that contains a grade content filter and firewall that will help keep your children safe. They will also have a user forum to discuss important factors on improving this firewall. They will be discussing how easy it is for children and even parents to get around their product so they can close each hole as it is discovered. Their accomplishments and failures will be open to the public to show everyone how they are working on keeping your children safe on the internet.

Tips to Keep Your Computer Secure and Virus-Free

Computers are our connection to information and people throughout the world, at work and home. And the more sophisticated technology gets â€" the more daring and hazardous computer viruses become. No sooner do we have a "new and full proof" method of protection than another threat appears ready to infect as many computers as possible.

If a virus is residing within a file attached to an e-mail, once opened, the virus will infiltrate the computer's hard drive attaching itself to files. Sending e-mails from the infected computer is a sure way to pass them on to other computers. Infected files saved to a disk, CD, or USB drive become easy carriers capable of infecting alternate computers as well.

How can we protect ourselves? Here are a few guidelines to follow to prevent damage from viruses or spyware, and damage to hardware.

Viruses:
Computer viruses are programs created that infect files causing loss of data, or system crashes. For protection against computer viruses, there is a "vaccine" called anti-virus software. The anti-virus software when set up properly, will scan the entire hard drive, and all e-mails (coming and going) on a daily basis. NEVER open e-mails with attachments from people you don't know (i.e. joe@whatsamattayou.com). There are several free anti-virus versions easily downloadable from secure internet sites. AVG Anti-Virus, is one of the best free versions available, and can be found at grisoft.com.

Spyware:
What is spyware? Spyware is a malicious program that can steal personal and financial information, monitor internet usage, and deliver unwelcome advertising. Pop-ups are an example of unwanted advertising, those endless little windows that jump out when navigating the internet. The remedy â€" anti-spyware software! This specially programmed software stops the annoying pop-ups, blocks spyware, and other nasty programs. Once again, this particular software is available on the internet, and provides more than adequate protection. Lavasoft has a free version called Ad-Aware that is available at Lavasoft.

Firewall:
What is a firewall? A firewall is the equivalent of a locked door that keeps out trespassers, or a virtual wall between your computer, and outsiders. It will only permit authorized persons to enter, and will prevent other computers from viewing personal identification information. Software is available as part of a complete package (anti-virus, anti-spyware & firewall), or separately. Zone Alarm has a full Security Suite, and a free single firewall version available for downloading at Zone Alarm Free Version.

Passwords:
A secure password is like a coded lock, or the key to a lock. A strong password â€" an effective password â€" is usually long, random, and can only be created by the user. The strongest passwords contain letters and numbers; DO NOT use the names of relatives, friends, or pets. NEVER write your password down, and leave it hanging around for someone else to copy! Lastly, change your password at least every two to three months.

Surge Protectors:
To protect computers from electrical failures, there are devices called surge protectors. These devices have a dual function they serve as power strips (for multiple devices); and as protection against spikes in electricity caused by blasts from electrical storms, or power failures. A top-notch device will usually have at the very least, four electrical sockets, and provide computer, audio and video equipment with the protection needed to avoid major damage.

The final word on protection is to backup (save) all computer data, that is, save important files. This should be done each day without fail. I cannot stress this step enough! Once I almost lost EVERYTHING, because I did not take the time to backup files. I backup the entire hard drive once every two weeks, but save new files or updated files, and important e-mails each day. For added protection, store critical data in a safe deposit box at the bank, or at the house of family, or friends.

The steps discussed above when followed consistently can help to prevent major damage from viruses, spyware, or natural disasters. Make it a habit to check reputable sites such as PCWorld.com, CNET.com, and About.com for tips and updates on technology.

SpywareBlaster a Free Alternative to Pricey Computer Protection

Spyware is the number one cause to slowness in your PC and everyone should have a good tool or program to eliminate or block spyware from their computer. Well there are plenty of costly programs that will keep you protected but I prefer free programs and have found and tested one that I can recommend to you. SpywareBlaster is a great free Spyware tool that not only eliminates the threat of Spyware it prevents it from ever being installed on your PC.

So what can SpywareBlaster do for you? Well this nifty little program will secure your system and help prevent Spyware, adware, browser hijackers and dialers. If you think you are immune to these threats you are delusional. Spyware is rampant all over the internet and sometimes you don't even realize that it has infected your system. You need something to stop the Spyware from installing on your machine and that is where SpywareBlaster comes into play.

I downloaded and installed SpywareBlaster version 3.5.1 (download here) which is the most current version of the free spyware blocking software. It is a simple install that doesn't take up much space and has a pretty straight forward install. Simple to do just follow the prompts, I did a typical install and didn't mess with any of the settings. I found in the FAQ some errors that might come up and they give good support on how to fix the problems easily and quickly. I did not encounter any problems but it's nice to know that the problems that have arisen are being dealt with.

Once I installed the program I went ahead and opened it, and I liked the setup it was simple to navigate and very intuitive. I think most user will be able to effectively use the simple interface and keep their systems protected. I like how they created different tabs for Internet Explorer and Firefox to keep both web browsers protected. They also show you when the last time the SpywareBlaster database was loaded so you know if you are up to date or not.

There are easy to follow tabs on the left side of SpywareBlaster which are your main categories and then across the top of each window they have buttons to change the settings of each side tab. There aren't a wide variety of settings that you can manipulate and you can't go real in-depth into each setting. You get a few options that you just have to deal with what they do; there isn't much room for customization here.

The lack of user defined options and exceptions make SpywareBlaster a little bit of a weak program in my mind. You have to either allow the settings or deny them which means if you don't like how it protects your machine then you have to either learn to deal with it or turn it off. I would like to see in future versions more customization options but hey it's a free program, you can't really complain too much.

I do like how SpywareBlaster has a System Snapshot option that will save all of the system settings you have so if a problem arises you can always go back to where you started. This can be a huge advantage if you are messing in the settings and suddenly you find you have created a problem with the security or are blocking something and don't know how to unblock it. You can now just restore you settings back to their original configuration and start over.

If you do decide to use SpywareBlaster then you will want to familiarize yourself with the Updates tab, this will ensure that SpywareBlaster is as up to date as possible and protecting you against all of the most current threats. If you don't stay up to date then SpywareBlaster can't promise your computer won't be at risk.

SpywareBlaster isn't the best protection program out there but it is a very good free tool for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot on protecting their PC. This is a free alternative to pricey spyware software but keep in mind it is supported only in someone's free time and might not be as effective as the anti spyware suites that are sold in stores.

A Selection of Free Computer Security Solutions

Trojans, Viruses, Spyware, malware, spam are synonym with computer users worldwide especially to those who frequent the internet. How much do they cost? They can cost us hundreds of dollars when purchased together as a potent computer security package.

It is a normal practice as 1 security solution may not be adequate to prevent, control & neutralize the threats. We usually require a combination of Antivirus, Anti spyware, & Firewall programs to make our computers safe.

So how do we cut our computer security costs? You may want to consider an alternative before you start shopping for the newest & relatively expensive computer security software. We can get the free computer security solutions!

Anti Virus

Let us look at AVG Antivirus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com). It features regular virus signature updates and adequate protection against viruses with the ability to quarantine and destroy detected viruses. However, the software tends to slow the computer dramatically during scanning. Additionally, the 7.1 free edition will be discontinued after the 18th February 2007 & replaced by a more updated 7.5 free edition version.

The fans of open source softwares may want to get Clamwin (http://www.clamwin.com). The software has most function of most commercial antivirus packages namely scan all types of drives, quarantine and delete infected files. Furthermore, it's very simple interface and straight forward usage will not burden the computers resources.

Next is the award winning Antivirus by various reviewers, AntiVir Personal Edition (www.free-av.com). The program boasts heuristic detection to detect previously unknown viruses. Another claimed feature is that it does not degrade the performance of our computers even the older ones. The user base of more than 15 million people and the ability to detect over 80,000 viruses proves it to be a popular choice.

Last but not least is the Avast! Home edition (www. Avast.com). The free package includes a malware stopper, a network shield, and assist in scanning emails for potential threats. It is considered a bargain for all the premium features that we can get for free.

Anti Spyware

It is essential to acquire Antispyware aside from antivirus protection for our computers. Thieves are more sophisticated and active especially nowadays when more people become exposed to the internet daily.

Numerous Anti spyware programs are available to us for free. Our computers will be safer to keep our sensitive information (passwords, pictures, etc). The Anti spyware will prevent them from being stolen by thieves utilizing Trojans & spyware. It is advisable to have at least 2 different Anti spyware programs on our computers. We should choose the ones which does not conflict with each other's operations.

Windows Vista is pre packed with Microsoft Windows Defender in the operating system's package. Other users still utilizing Windows XP will have to download the Anti spyware from the Microsoft website. It is available for free.

A newcomer to the anti spyware arena is Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com). It incorporates Clam anti virus into the scanning process. Users can choose whether to perform a quick anti spyware scan or a full scan inclusive of a virus scan. The program will prompt users to activate beginner, advance and expert modes of real time protection during installation. Beginner category will have the program requiring minimal user intervention. The advance and expert categories will require decisions from users whether to block or allow any deemed intrusive actions of other programs on our computers.

Ad-Aware SE Personal edition (www.lavasoftusa.com) is a time proven anti spyware. The free version incorporates most of the features found in the Pro version. What it obviously lacks is the Ad-watch feature. It monitors our computers constantly and alerts us when a threat arises much like how a real time anti spyware protection function operates.

Spybot Search and Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) has an immunization option and it should be launched after every successful updating of the program. It offers decent protection against spyware, keyloggers, Trojans & other internet borne threats and it's scanning process is relatively quick too.

Firewalls

Software firewalls are useful to prevent information from being sent out of our computers without our consent. The program will usually query the user before executing an action against a possible threat. The frequency of the queries depends on the level of security selected by the user and what kind of programs installed on our computers.

ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com) began as a free firewall and has now evolved into a commercial firewall software. However, the free version is still downloadable at the site minus some features of the pro version. The firewall is efficient at blocking potential incoming and outgoing threats. It can even be setup to block all online activity while we are away from our computers.

Another Firewall software available for downloading is the Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall (www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm) which all features are made available for the first 30 days trial period. The full features includes pop-up blocking etc. Thereafter, users are obliged to purchase the Firewall or may choose to continue utilizing the free albeit restricted version which adequately provides the required Firewall security for our computers.

Could any new installation of an internet based application not function properly then our Firewall settings must be checked first. A Firewall software is very advanced and may halt applications which is more than what it is supposed to do.

One may consider that purchasing expensive commercial computer security programs are well worth it. However, it does not guarantee a totally safe computing environment and we may find that we do not need the extra features offered by the commercial versions.

Cost efficiency is what free computer protection programs do best. It can be a better alternative to expensive commercial packages considering the more than adequate computer protection provided by it at no cost to us. - http://abasstertechnology.blogspot.com

How to Clear the Spyware XP Antivirus 2008 from Your Computer

XP Antivirus 2008 is one of the most insidious spywares out there today. It is so bad that it managed to get past the full-blown McAfee protection suite that I have on my personal computer. I was devastated thinking I was never going to get this thing off of my computer which up until now had remained both virus and spyware free.

The most important thing to understand about this new spyware is that you can't just get it from cruising porn websites. I got it from doing research on an article I was writing for a paying client about movie star Angelina Jolie. I was looking at a website about the movie star and taking notes when suddenly my McAfee went nuts saying there were trojans trying to be downloaded onto my computer. Once I realized what was happening I quickly began backing out of the website and closing all the little pop up windows that were suddenly appearing, but by then it was too late. The spyware had somehow tricked McAfee into letting it onto my computer.

I was in a word devastated because I had no way of knowing just what this stuff was going to do to my computer security. It had replaced my desktop wallpaper with a blue screen and little pop up window saying that my computer was infected. Well, duh! I had already figured that out. My next step was to go and see if the spyware was in my control panel's program listing which strangely enough it was. I tried to uninstall it and of course it said it was uninstalled but unlike other programs it did not disappear from the list once it was uninstalled but instead remained.

My next step was to go to my trusty AdAware and run it, and lo and behold that did absolutely...nothing. AdAware didn't even know this stuff was on my computer. Like McAfee it acted as if it wasn't even there. That was when I knew I needed to go online and see if I could find out how to remove this nasty spyware. Only one problem, Google and Yahoo would both get hijacked as soon as I left the page with the results to a webpage about, you guessed it XP Antivirus 2008 software for you computer. I finally realized that some enterprising marketer or someone who hated the company that puts out this software had created a spyware to mess with my and other's computers. Finally in desperation I went to Ask.com and would you believe, suddenly I'm not being hijacked. I spent three hours searching online for the answer to remove this spyware from my computer. Most of the answers were things like, "back up your computer and then wipe your hard drive and reinstall windows," or "you're going to need to take this to a professional to remove," and finally, "well here are some instructions to remove it manually yourself, but if you're not a computer expert we don't suggest you try this." I was not a happy person until I finally came across a website for computer experts that made sense. On this website it was suggested that I download a software called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It said that in the majority of cases this software was able to remove this spyware. I downloaded and installed it and then prayed.

Fortunately, this software successfully removed XP Antivirus 2008 from my computer, including the nasty desktop background it had added. While you can download this software for free and use it for free, if you purchase the Pro version for a measly $24.95 it will actually monitor your computer just like your Anti-Virus software does to protect you from spyware trying to get onto your computer. It has a few other bells and whistles as well. Or you can just download the free version and run it once a week to be sure nothing has slipped past your firewall and protection suite.

I thought my computer was totally protected but I learned recently that is not the case. You can have a great firewall, and even a full protection suite as I do and still get spyware/malware. I really recommend getting Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and checking your computer often, even if you don't get the XP Anitivirus 2008 spyware on your computer, it's worth it!
